Creating a Cozy and Functional Bedroom

Episode Two of the “Creating a Home” Series

I used to think a beautiful bedroom was all about the look. The perfect bedding, styled nightstands, soft lighting—those Pinterest-worthy moments. But over time, I’ve realized that function is just as important. Especially in a room meant for both rest and creativity.

When my clothes are put away, my dresser is clean, and my desk isn’t a disaster, I feel clear-headed. I have space to create. But when my bedroom is cluttered, it’s like the things I own start weighing me down. They become one more layer of noise in a space that’s supposed to help me feel calm and grounded.

This is episode two in my Creating a Home series—an honest look at how I shape our spaces with intention, function, and a little bit of creativity. My hope is that these posts encourage you to think about what you really need from a space, not just what it should look like.

Why This Bedroom Matters

This isn’t just a bedroom—it’s my creative zone. It’s where I brainstorm, write, film YouTube videos, and also, you know… sleep. It’s my workspace, my thinking space, and my retreat.

But like most rooms in our home, it’s still a work in progress. We haven’t added trim yet, and we don’t even have a proper bedroom door. The closet? Let’s just say I totally regret the way we built it out. It doesn’t function well, and it’s something we’ll have to revisit down the line. (Trust me, it’ll make its way into a future episode.)

The Power of Rest

One thing I have prioritized in this room is sleep. Over the years, I’ve grown to really appreciate the power of rest—and I’ve made a few small shifts to support better sleep habits:

  • I keep the room cool and dark at night.

  • I use soft, warm lighting instead of overhead lights in the evening.

  • I try to limit screen time before bed, choosing to read or do something calming instead.

These tiny choices signal to my body that it’s time to slow down. And they’ve made a huge difference in how rested I feel each morning.

The Reality of a Lived-In Bedroom

Let’s talk about the real side of a bedroom. The Pinterest-perfect moments are lovely, but in real life? The throw pillows usually end up on the floor. Our bed is rarely made. And my husband and I don’t even share the same blanket setup—he uses a quilt his mom made him, and I prefer a down comforter. But honestly? He finds it too hot.

I do believe in investing in quality materials, though. I stick to 100% cotton bedding, with flannel sheets in the winter and regular cotton in the summer. I’ve thought about trying linen sheets, but my husband’s not so sure. I keep threatening to buy them anyway… should I? Tell me I don’t need them—or give me permission to go for it!

One splurge we did make in this room was our sconces. They’re dimmable, cozy, and perfect for winding down at night. And yes, they’re absolutely coming with us if we ever move.

Looking Ahead: The Entryway

A bedroom should feel like a retreat, but it’s not the only space that sets the tone at home. One of the biggest challenges in daily life is managing what comes in and out of the house—mail, bags, shoes, coats, all the little things that pile up fast.

That’s why the next space I’m focusing on is our entryway. It’s the first space we interact with every day, and if it’s chaotic, everything else feels harder. In the next episode, I’ll be creating a functional and welcoming entry that supports our routines and feels warm and intentional.

If you missed episode one of this series, we started in the kitchen—working on making it feel calm, cozy, and functional while embracing the imperfect pace of progress. And if this is your first time here, welcome. I’m so glad you’re following along as we slowly shape this home.
