The three things you need to know when renovating a 100-year old home.
As we purchased our 1890’s home we knew there would be a lot of work to put into it. I’m not sure about my husband, but I definitely underestimated how long demo was going to take. So if you are thinking of buying an older home and renovating it here’s what you need to know.
- It is going to take longer than you think. I know I mentioned it with demo, but it truly will be a labor of love. This is reality not instagram or HGTV. There isn’t someone coming to do all the work for you unless you pay them too.
- Your plan is going to change. However you thought it was going to go will change and being able to adapt with it will make the whole process go much easier. There will be hiccups and hopefully it would be too costly in time or in money.
- Renovating will become your hobby. Anything else you thought you would be doing is going to fall to the wayside as you embark on a massive home transformation.
I think if you can wrap your head around these three things you’ll find joy in the renovation. There is nothing that cannot be figured out. Enjoy the chaos of the construction zone and make progress everyday. Progress is progress no matter how small. I always tell myself what I do today I won’t have to do tomorrow.
