Creating a Home | Part One: The Kitchen

Finding Ease, Function, and a Style That Feels Like You

When you’re in the early stages of creating a home, it’s easy to zero in on the material things first. I definitely did. I wanted my home to look like the ones I admired on Instagram and Pinterest—cozy, intentional, and effortlessly put together.

But here’s the truth: most of the time, it just felt… off. Like a mismatched version of my favorite creators instead of a true reflection of me.

That’s when I realized: I didn’t want to just recreate someone else’s vibe. I wanted a home that felt like mine. A place grounded in the things I actually value. A space that supported the season I’m in and brought me a sense of calm and joy—not more pressure to “get it right.”

What This Series Is All About

That’s what this new series—Creating a Home—is all about. It’s not about perfect aesthetics or a checklist of design rules. It’s about tuning into what you need from a space and getting creative with what you already have.

Maybe your style is cozy and collected. Maybe it’s minimal and calm. Or maybe you’re embracing full-on grandma-core with a modern twist. Whatever your style, I hope you feel encouraged here to make your home a reflection of you—not just what you think it’s supposed to look like.

Starting in the Kitchen

For me, this season is all about craving ease and simplicity. I get overwhelmed by clutter, and I find peace in a neutral color palette. I’m drawn to calm, intentional spaces—and that’s exactly what I wanted to create in our kitchen.

But before I could get to any styling, I had to focus on the foundation: decluttering and organizing.

Decluttering: Working With What You Have

One of the biggest things I’ve learned through moving is that I tend to overcomplicate storage. I get caught up in solutions instead of just asking what actually works for us. So this time, I slowed down.

I repurposed what I already had. I asked, Do I really use this? And I kept only what truly served a purpose in this season.

✨ Tip: Before buying new storage containers, try organizing with what you already own. See how the space naturally wants to function.

Styling With Intention

Once the kitchen felt more functional, it was time to add a little warmth. I didn’t want to over-style or add clutter for the sake of a photo. Instead, I focused on styling the everyday items we already use:

  • A wooden cutting board leaning against the backsplash

  • A linen towel draped casually on the counter

  • A well-loved cookbook, left open to a favorite recipe

These little details added personality without feeling forced. They made the space feel lived-in, layered, and ours.

✨ Reminder: A home should evolve with you. Start with small, meaningful touches instead of rushing to “finish” a room.

Looking Ahead: The Bedroom

The kitchen is finally starting to feel more settled—but there’s still more to do, and I’m okay with that. I’ve let go of the need for every corner to be done all at once. Creating a home takes time.

Next up? The bedroom.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned—it’s that creating a restful, functional bedroom makes everything else feel easier. And let’s just say… ours still needs some love. Think unmade bed, clothes that need a home, and a blank wall waiting for art.
